Athens Insomnia Scale
Insomnia test
Eight questions about your sleep over the past month. Answer with only those difficulties in mind that occurred at least three times a week.
Question 1 of 8
Over the past month, at least 3 times a week
Sleep induction
The time it takes you to fall asleep after turning off the light.
What the scale measures
The first five items concern the night: how long you take to fall asleep, how much you wake, how early sleep ends, how many hours and of what quality. The last three concern the day — because insomnia is defined not only by what happens in bed, but by what it costs you the next day.
How to read it
- 0–3no indication of insomnia
- 4–5borderline score
- 6–11probable insomnia — warrants assessment
- 12–24severe symptoms
An important clarification
This test is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A high score does not automatically mean insomnia — it may be caused by another sleep disorder, such as sleep apnoea, which requires laboratory testing. A low score does not rule a problem out. In every case, the picture is completed by a clinical assessment.
